Frequently Asked Questions

We've assembled some answers to common questions about ballroom dance lessons.

Do I need a partner to start learning how to ballroom dance?

No, you don't need a partner to start. While learning how to ballroom dance with a friend or loved one is fun and a great way to deepen and improve your relationship, you don't need a partner to get started.

There are advantages to starting without a partner. In the beginning one of the biggest challenges to learning how to dance is trying to effectively partner someone else who is also trying to learn. Starting on your own allows you to focus purely on yourself, improving your own dancing before you have to worry about partnering someone else. This is most effectively done by initially dancing with you instructor.

Is learning how to ballroom dance expensive?

The cost of learning how to ballroom dance depends on your personal goals and how much work you are willing to do on your own. A dance instructor fills two different but important roles: teacher; and motivator. As a teacher we can communicate information in a relatively small amount of time. Many of our students take more lessons because they enjoy receiving additional instruction and motivation to do the work to get better. What we've found is that given our approach, students are still able to make progress taking fewer lessons but working harder on their own.

One thing we can confidently say is that we will work our hardest to see that you experience significant value and life changing benefit from the money that you choose to spend with us.

Do you teach salsa (or any other partner dance that I may be interested in)?

The short answer is yes! Our more than 15 years of experience makes us confident in teaching any dance style. Whether it be a ballroom dance like: Waltz, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, or Tango or a latin dance like: Cha Cha, Rhumba, Samba, Paso Doble, Jive, Swing, Bolero, or Mambo to even specialty social dances like: Hustle, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Night Club Two Step and West Coast Swing, we can get you started. If it is a dance style that we are less than familiar with, we will be honest with you and when the time is right, direct you to an instructor with more specific expertise.

What we have found is that students benefit greatly from our approach as seeing all forms of partner dancing connected by the same universal principles. Once they start with us, they find any new dance style much easier to pick up because they see how the movement principles that we teach apply to all the dances.

I also take lessons from Arthur Murray, do you teach the same way?

We have many students who either started or are currently still taking lessons from Arthur Murray or another franchise dance studio. We love working with them because we find that the franchise studios are pretty effective at getting people excited about dancing. We both started teaching in the U.S. in franchise studios (Monika at both Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire and Roberto at Fred Astaire).

What we know is that if you are interested in quality of instruction, we deliver higher quality instruction for less cost. Arthur Murray has challenges keeping experienced instructors, so typically you are not going to find an instructor at Arthur Murray who has our experience. That being said we recognize and respect what is special about Arthur Murray and our approach has and will continue to help students who started at Murray accelerate their improvement. Also we are happy to provide supplemental instruction to help you make a bigger impression at your upcoming Athur Murray showcase or Danceorama.
